Kid Inspired Creativity - House and Gardens finalist 2015

This fun, stylish bathroom designed with kids in mind really caught the judges' eye: A room with personality that reminds us bathrooms don't need to be boring," they said. The primary users are the three children, aged five to 14, of Cambridge homeowner Juliet Coleman. "I wanted a room that was not too childlike that would grow with the children," says Juliet, who took her design cue from her 10-year-old son's paintings.  ("I've always loved them - the colours, the shapes"). They were also the source of the room's burnt umber orange accent colour.

Juliet threw herself into the project work by working on the tiling, grouting, beading and painting herself. It was all done as part of a wider bungalow renovation, so she chose period-appropriate details such as white subway tiles and dado beading, cleverly integrating them into her bright, lively scheme. The kids love it, and so did the judges.
